This photo was taken on Watamu Beach in Kenya on an especially clear summer evening in 2015.Time
After a long day of teaching kitesurfing we we're treated to a beautiful sunset on the beach. I retired to my home and by chance glanced out of the window to see a wonderfully clear night. I walked down to the beach at about 11pm with my camera gear and started snapping away.Lighting
It was a beautifully clear night and the only sources of light were the majestic milky way above and the distant lights of Mombasa on the horizon.Equipment
This was shot on the Sony A6000 Mirrorless camera using the Samyang 12mm f2 to capture this wide angle shot and gather as much light as possible to keep the ISO and shutter speed low.Inspiration
I have always been in awe of astrophotography and thought it was only for the really talented photographers until I discovered people getting stunning astro shots using the sony a6000. The lens is key and the samyang came highly regarded and i purchased it the year before and got a couple of passable astro-photography shots.Editing
The A6000 is a very capable camera and the lack of noise in these shots was impressive. The photo was taken in RAW and processed in lightroom to increase contrast, change the colour balance and increase the structure of the milky way. Nothing too advanced! In my camera bag
Most of my photography tends to be whilst travelling and as such i travel light (one of the benefits of the mirrorless systems). In my bag for this trip i had: - Sony a6000 - Samyang 12mm f2 - Sony E 18 - 200 - Sony E 35 f1.8 - Cheap Ebay carbon tripod A nice neat and portable package for when on the road.Feedback
My main advice for a shot like this is to get out of the city, away from light pollution to capture the night's sky as it is meant to be seen. One handy tool to use is: http://www.lightpollutionmap.info/ which will give you your nearest spots with less light pollution. Make sure you head there on a clear night without the moon in full force as this can ruin a shot of the milky way. Once there find a good subject to frame against the milky way as this will give much more presence to your photo. I recommend taking a few test shots with your camera set to the highest ISO, it will be noisy but it will give you an idea of the final result. Once you are happy with the focusing - experiment with the aperature, shutter speed and ISO to create your ideal shot. You can capture the nights sky with any lens and camera but some will have greater results than others. I highly recommend the samyang 12mm f2 as it can create wonderful astrophotography results. Thank you for taking the time to read this and thank you for your support. A few nights before this shot I created a panorama of the milky way which has won me a viewbug award a few weeks back.
