This is the first in a few low key experimentation photos, I had never even considered this style of photography until I saw a recent article by Christian Meermann on this technique. I would greatly appreciate your feedback and critique.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on Safari in South Africa during a 6 month trip in the Cape Town area.

Time

This photo was taken in the mid afternoon at the end of a day Safari where we caught sight of this majestic male lion.

Lighting

Despite this photos low key appearance this photo was taken with nothing other than slightly overcast daylight. Most of the styling and details were brought out in post.

Equipment

Sony a6000, 18-200mm lens. My simple travel setup.

Inspiration

This photo was one of many taken that day but I came across an article on low key photography online and decided to pick some of my shots and give it a go. I have to say i am intregued by this technique and hope to do many more.

Editing

This photo and style only came to life in post processing. After I got the levels and details out in lightroom I used Nik Silver Efex (which is now free by the way) to adjust the levels even further, the background was removed using dodge and burn to emphasise the lighting on the lion.

In my camera bag

When travelling i usually resort to carrying my Sony a6000, 18-200mm lens, 35mm 1.8 and 20mm 2.8. This setup fits into a very small bag and allows me to capture most moments on the road.

Feedback

My advice is to try this technique for yourself, I always thought this style was only possible through studio setups and expensive lighting but chances are you probably have a plethora of images which would be suitable to try this style with. There are plenty of videos and guides online to help spark your creativity. I have always been a multi-discipline photographer and this technique only adds another string to my bow. Give it a go and get creative!
