Location
Hwy 28 near Hot Springs, MTTime
It was dusk and the sunset was fading away.Lighting
Purely accidental encounter. I don't think the natural lighting could have been better to capture both the fire and the surroundings.Equipment
Canon 5D Mk II and a Canon 24-70L lens.Inspiration
A photographer cousin of mine and myself were moving a camper from Spokane, WA to Kalispell, MT. As we drove down the road I witnessed the blazing birth of this fire, which initially was in the canopy of the tree. I pointed and shouted to my cousin to stop the car as fast as he could. We both came bounding out of the car and began furiously snapping photos of the scene.Editing
This image had both the highlights and shadows enhanced a little in Adobe Camera RAW and then was sharpened some more in Photoshop. In my camera bag
Usually, I have everything I can carry. Lately, I have trimmed it down to my Canon 5D Mk II and my trusty 24-70L lens, a tripod, a remote trigger and a handful of lens filters.Feedback
It would be awesome to plan something like this but I don't know how you'd get the clouds to work so nicely as these did. I'd advise you to always have your camera ready when you're on the road. You never know what's around the next corner.
