Behind The Lens

Location
In a dark run-down building in downtown Spokane, WA.
Time
It was late. After 10pm.
Lighting
All of the light was provided by the arc of the welder. Depending on the speed the welder worked and my shutter speed it was like using a multi-burst with a speedlight. Just a bit less predictable. ;)
Equipment
Canon 5D Mk II, Canon 24-70L Lens.
Inspiration
The welder in the photo actually asked me to come down and take some photos of him working. Once I arrived he simply stated, "I'll be working over here, do you're thing."
Editing
Initially I processed the RAW file in Lightroom and then brought it into Photoshop and applied a highpass filter to a copy of the image set to overlay. This really sharpened up the sparks and made them pop.
In my camera bag
Usually everything but the kitchen sink. Working on downsizing now. ;)
Feedback
Don't look directly at the arc. Not even through your viewfinder. Compose the shot, then fire while looking the other way when you can see the welder is working. Vary your exposure time to get longer or shorter spark trails.
