Behind The Lens

Location

In a village in Namibia, Damaraland

Time

It was taken during the late morning

Lighting

The day was a little overcast, not too bright sunlight. I used ISO 160, f/6,3, 1/160.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D700, no tripod or flash

Inspiration

We were walking around in a village in Damaraland, which was set up for tourists. I did not like it too much. But this little girl was following us around and watched us. She was quite shy and did not participate in any of the activities for tourists. I was fascinated by her beauty, in particular the beauty of her eyes, her shyness and her curiosity. Melancholy, sadness, very intense expression in her eyes.

Editing

I converted the photo into black and white in lightroom.

In my camera bag

I carry a Nikon D4 or 5 in my bag. For every occasion a different lens from 14 to 600 mm, macro in the summer for insects. For the 600 mm I use a tripod or a bean bag , when I stay in the car.

Feedback

“Great photography is about depth of feeling, not depth of field.” — Peter Adams I think that this is very true. It is impossible to take a good photo without a feeling. If you are intrigued by someone or something or you love something or someone, it is easier to take a good photo. And I strongly believe that taking a photo of people has to do with respect. If your "model" feels that you respect her or him and you build a connection, the photo will turn out great. Nature photography became a big part of my life. It helps me to keep my sanity, to put things into perspective, to connect to the world around me. Admiration of the beauty of nature, that is what I try to capture. And yes, the admiration of the beauty might be more important than the technical know how, which is still a prerequisite for a good photo.
