Long time ago the chain mail gloves, or even the whole chain mail suit, used to be the divers' top-choice protection against animal bite, mostly used in shark-abundant areas.

A diving couple, Valerie and Ron Taylor, were the inventors and live testers of the suit (1980, look them up!). Steel mesh overall weighed about 7 kilograms and was worn over the diving suit.

I used to wear such a glove for deeper dives when I wasn't always able to see what lives in or near the rock I'd grab to stabilize myself while photographing. And the moray eels, say, do not like being grabbed at all; neither by intent nor by mistake.

Nowadays the chain-mail glove has become quite common protective means for people using sharp tools in their work (such as cooks or butchers) and the prices have since plummeted by an order of magnitude. Thus, every diver who likes to explore deep holes and cracks should consider using one.
