Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo near torrechaira in the province of Parma. In a field near the famous Castle, there is this isolated tree.

Time

Late at night, of course, a moonless night.

Lighting

This type of photo is almost always taken with exclusively natural light. In this case there was also the red lantern, which I appropriately highlighted in post production.

Equipment

For this kind of photo, you nedd a good tripod, a speed wide angle and a camera that behaves well with high ISO is essential. In particular, I used the manfrotto 055 with a Chinese panoramic head, the sony a7iii which I believe is still one of the best cameras for this type of photography and the sony 28mm f2, a very good lens for what it costs.

Inspiration

Yes this tree offers a good composition so isolated in the middle of the hill, with the milky way above, but I think something was missing to make the photo even more interesting. So I asked my companion in photographic adventures Michele to put himself in a compositionally interesting position with a lantern that I carry with me during the night outings. It's a 10 euro dechatlon lantern that also makes a faint red light ... in my opinion very interesting in night photography.

Editing

Yes in this kind of photography post production is essential. Meanwhile, this photo is an panorama of 9 photos taken vertically jointged, after which the Milky Way taken in these areas always needs a "push" to be clearly visible. Then I always act on the colors, to reach the shades that I like and that give even more the idea of ??the night. I don't like those night photos that are so clear that they look like they were taken during the day. Night is night.

In my camera bag

Normally in my bag there is always my sony A7iii and the wide angle. I have several both fixed and zoom of different types, from extreme to moderate, from speed to dark that I choose depending on what I want to bring home. I also have other types of lenses for other types of photography as I take some portraits sometimes. For this type of photo, a good speed wide angle is fundamental, but not extreme. I use 28mm or sometimed the 35mm. To capture a lot of the Milky Way it will be enough to join in post production, taking more shots and combining them will give much more definition to the photo and will almost make the digital noise disappear. Panning is like having a bigger sensor.

Feedback

Find a dark place as much as possible. Away from the city. Find something isolated, compositionally valid and then use your imagination. Never go alone to take pictures at night. These are the tips I can give you.
