Location
I took this photo at torre di Barì, a little town in the western area of the island of SardiniaTime
As you can see, the photo was taken at night. It was August and the Milky Way at this time of year is visible early in the night, so it was quite early, maybe 9pm or 10pm.Lighting
Of course there is no artificial lighting in this photo, the only thing I want to point out is that I put myself behind the tower in order to hide as much as possible the light pollution that came from the village. The tower is on the seashore, so no light comes from behindEquipment
A good tripod, a camera that can handle high ISO and a speedy wide angle is essential for this type of shooting.Inspiration
It was a while that I wanted to photograph the Milky Way from this beautiful spot in Sardinia. The tower was built in 1500 by the Spaniards who at the time ruled the island to protect themselves from pirate raids. It seemed to me that this point of view, from the bottom to the sky with an arch of the Milky Way above it could be interesting.Editing
The post production in this type of shots is essential. The Milky Way is an object of the deep sky that although it is immense (since we are inside it) has a low brightness that to be appreciated, must be enhanced in post production. There are various shoot techniques and here I used the simplest one, i.e. a shot with a time that is not too long in order not to have streaks of the stars (the so-called rule of 500 is used, i.e. exposure time expressed in seconds equal to 500 / focal length), aperture open to the maximum possible, ISO enough, usually 3200.In my camera bag
When I go out to do a landscape I never forget my wideangle. Lately I have fallen in love with the laowa 10-18 which has a simply crazy angle of view and offers unique shots. For this type of shots it would actually be better to prefer the brightness of the lens over the angle of view. In fact, you can easily merge panoramas in post production, without trying to get everything with a single shot. Astrophotography is rarely done with a single shot.Feedback
To take night photos, planning is essential, the inspection during the day to realize the situation that will be found at night. Astrophotography is a genre that unfortunately cannot be improvised.
