Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Lisbon, Portugal

Time

It was about 3 PM.

Lighting

The light was great for this photo, heavy rain just stopped and the clouds were opening a bit, creating a wonderful contrast rich glow for a black and white photo!

Equipment

I didn't use any equipment other then my wonderful little Lumix DMC-TZ100, a very nice compact camera for spontanious street photography.

Inspiration

We were in Lisbon midsummer when thick clouds covered the city and rain started pouring down, and when it starts to rain in Lisbon, you will get wet! We sheltered in a little shop and waited for quite a long time. When the rain more or less stopped, I wanted to capture wet Lisbon in a dramatic Black and White. After a few minutes we came along this suburbian bridge with just the right contrast and after rain glow I was looking for. The only thing that was missing was the silhouetted couple walking under the brige, but that didn't take a long time in this crowded city!

Editing

I cropped, edited and turned it into B&W in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

I don't have any equipment in my bag (yet) I am a beginning photographer and I am learning to use a camera, to look for the good light, composition and point of view. One day when I know how to use and set the camera well enough, I will start to think about a bag filled with technical things instead of the need to understand...

Feedback

The first and best advice I can give anybody is to be patient and wait until that one moment you are looking for comes around... But before you can take the photo, you have to have an idea what you want to achieve and where. Look when the light will be good and from what position you want to take your photo. The right time of day and the right weather are important as well. I was trying to take a nice photo of the tunnel after the rain but I missed something in the composition…I tried to find a nice POV and waited until someone was coming along to complete the image. When I walk through a city or anywhere else, I allways look around me very carefully to see the details of wich the world around me is build up. I try to look through a pinhole, without forgetting the whole picture. If you look at a subject to photograph, you have to try to realise what kind of composition you want to create... And most of all, take more shots with slightly different settings so you can choose the best one. Once you get home and open your laptop, the magic of today's world begins... I allways crop it later into the size and composition I like best. Crop the photo in different ways, so you can choose the best one the next day when you can have a fresh look at them!
