Location
I scouted old buildings in Philadelphia’s historic district the day before the shoot. This red French door was in front of The Olde Bar, formerly the Original Bookbinder’s building.Time
Taken September 2017, 8:39 AM, before the restaurant opened.Lighting
Sunlight was hitting the French doors at an undesirable angle. The restaurant was not open yet, so I borrowed one of their red patio umbrellas. I angled it for shade while allowing a bit of rim light. I bounced a speedlight into the umbrella while adjusting the color temperature in-camera to compensate for the colorshift from the red umbrella.Equipment
Shot with a Canon 5D III and 28-70mm f/2.8L II, speedlight and restaurant patio umbrella.Inspiration
I wanted to shoot a variety of people in Philadelphia using the historic architecture as backdrops. It was a great experience shooting on the old cobblestone streets just blocks from Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. The model was Grace, a grad student and teacher.Editing
Raw image workflow included color and exposure adjustment in Lightroom with retouching in Photoshop. In my camera bag
I currently shoot with a Canon R5, but previously carried a 5D IV and 5D III. For travel and street photography, I typically carry two lenses. Portable strobes include speedlights, AD200s, Manfrotto Nanopole stands, Photoflex small OctoDome, SMDV Speedbox and Westcott Beauty Dish.Feedback
Study the environment. Study the subject. Create a plan and then act spontaneously.
