Behind The Lens

Location

On a country road in my hometown, Bollebygd.

Time

It appears to be at night, but it was actually in the afternoon.

Lighting

Make sure the part of the object/subject you want portrayed is in the light. This photo would have been rubbish with the tailend darkened.

Equipment

Nikon D7100 and nikkor 24-70mm f2.8, Andersson PRO Polarizer filter, handheld.

Inspiration

It was taken for a magazine in fall of 2015. I was shooting according to their standard measures for story photos and speed shots is one of their criteria.

Editing

Mounds of it. As it was taken during daytime and in color, I had to first make it black and white and then find a good filter to turn the light around, making the sunlight look like moonlight, the sky to get the right nuance then add stars and a satellite trail and so forth. It took a while but it is fun to play around with all the gadgets in Photoshop. That's how you learn the program. It was not intended to fool anyone I just liked the result and wanted to display it.

In my camera bag

Nikon D750, nikkor 24-70mm, 70-200, 200-500 and a 50mm. Sirui tripod, Manfrotto LED8, a remote release and some cleaning tools and ND filters.

Feedback

To capture speed, I suggest going to a highly trafficed road and practice panning. I find it harder to capture speed with my FX than the DX camera so it takes practice. Try different settings (about 80th of a second is usually pretty good to capture speed but also to blur the background. However, it also depends on the speed of the vehicle in this case. Most important is to keep the camera steady and move it along with the moving subject. Not too fast or too slow or it will ruin the shot.
