I do however, think the photo might benefit from a cropping out the top of the stump to make it look more like a growing tree instead of a stump. just sayin'

I have a few shots like that too but the light is better here and the mushrooms just seem more magical here as well. It's about the feeling, you know. :-)

i have a challenge you may like

I do think mushrooms may have a fairy tale aspect that makes them interesting but I have a different theory regarding why people “like” them. I noticed 2 things a rose and the moon are probably the things most photographed. They are beautiful and awe inspiring. Yet they get the least “likes”. I believe this is the case because they have been photographed so much it exhausts our collective response. We still appreciate beauty but also the unusual. In everyday life we pass over fungi with no appreciation if not for outright disdain. A good, not necessarily perfect mushroom picture is unusually pleasing. I have taken photos of some ugly fungi which have not elicited a favorable response.

Thank for writing. Yes, I think you are on to something when it comes to commonly photographed objects/subjects.

Behind The Lens

Location

In the woods between Bollebygd and Rävlanda, Sweden in the fall of 2016.

Time

Afternoon as far as I remember. It wasn't the brightest of day but when I passed this stump, as you can see, the rays of sun came through for a moment in the background.

Lighting

What's good about a cloudy day is that the light is spread evenly. If the sun is out then you have to watch the angles of your object/subject. You don't want to photograph the shaded area.

Equipment

Nikon d7100, nikkor 24-70mm, Andersson Pro polarizer filter, handheld.

Inspiration

When I saw the cluster of mushrooms my instinct was so raise the camera, kneel down and just "snap it". I have seen mushroom photos many times before and for some reason they evoke a mysterious feeling to the spectator. It seems to work every time if you compose it right. Usually macro but this is just a close up.

Editing

I did a bit of warming of colors and details, the normal raw to jpg convertion but in general the photo is as I took it. It was just a bit flat in color as it was cloudy that day.

In my camera bag

Nikon d750, 24-70, 70-200, 200-500 mm at the moment. A remote release and a few nd filters just in case I want to do long exposures.

Feedback

Mushrooms on tree stumps only last for a few days before they disappear (rot) so don't wait to take the photo another day, they could be gone already. Take the photo and do post processing instead. It's my number one tip for a photo like this. Oh, and stay low to the ground! It will make the composition so much more interesting to view as most people only see these things from above. It will give them a new perspective, which in its turn is alluring and captivating.
