We were out hiking about Kennicott glacier with a guide when we spotted this fellow some distance away scaling one of the many glacier vertical faces. He appeared to be alone and wasn't using any ropes. Our guide recognized him and said he was another guide who he assumed was out exploring the glacier on his day off.

being old and cowardly, i can only hope that you have Photo-shopped the rope out of the picture; somehow, i doubt it. Great capture.

We were exploring the upper surface of the Kennicott Glacier with a guide when we spotted this fellow on his own scaling one of the Glacier's many sides without the aid of ropes.

Thank you John. The credit really goes to the ice climber for his skill and confidence in what he was doing.

OMG! I guess people really don't like being restrained. At least the extremely courageous. Either that or this guy just found the edge of the flat earth!

Location
I was traveling with a guide across Kennicott glacier when I saw this fellow at a distance scaling up the side of a major break in the ice. He appeared to have no safety rope should he slip and fall. He appeared to be on his own.Time
It was late afternoon on a cloudy day.Lighting
I was grateful for the cloudy weather. Under these muted conditions the exposure differences between the ice climber and the glacier were not all that great so that it was possible to see both the details in the climber and the the ice itself. Had it been sunny the reflection off the glacier would have been so overwhelmingly bright as to be totally washed out when exposing for the person.Equipment
My standard photography equipment for the field is a Nikon D500 and a Nikkor 18-300 mm lens. This enables me to switch from wide angle to telephoto on the fly without having to take the lens off and risk getting dust on the screen, or possibly losing the shot during lens changes. I do a lot of wildlife photography where being continually ready is important.Inspiration
I am always looking for interesting action shots. This was pretty unusual.Editing
I always photograph in Camera Raw with a view to processing later. Almost every photograph is improved with some tweaking, especially when having been recorded under field conditions. In my camera bag
Often I will carry an external flash and a carbon fiber tripod all of which fit within my sling bag along with the camera and lens. An additional piece of equipment I highly recommend is a knee pad. It serves many purposes. I use it in the field to kneel, sit or lie my elbows across both for comfort and sometimes to keep me from getting wet if the ground is damp. I also use it as my camera's primary protection in the sling bag, having removed the original insulation.Feedback
Don't hesitate to take lots of shots.
