Behind The Lens

Location

Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Time

It was at around 4pm, during what was probably the worst blizzard I had ever experienced in Halifax.

Lighting

All natural.

Equipment

Canon 5d Mark III, Sigma 24-70mm, and SLK Tripod.

Inspiration

It was the first photo of what turned into an ongoing series about my anxieties. I was feeling extremely claustrophobic and restless at home, but I considered how irrational it would be to leave and take photos during a horrible blizzard. This got me thinking about all the experiences that we avoid, to minimize risk or harm to oneself, which stops us from venturing out of our comfort zones. So I decided to go out of my comfort zone.

Editing

All of my self portraits include manipulations done through photoshop. The main manipulation in this one being the wolf. I created a PNG file of just the wolf. I then adjusted its color temperature to that of what I had set my self portrait to. I then pasted the layer into the photo, and used a gaussian blur filter to make it match the depth of field of its surrounding environment. Once I was satisfied, I began to edit the photo as a whole using curve adjustments.

I'm a heavy packer, and I almost always regret bringing my entire kit. I have my: Canon 5d Mark III Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS II Canon 17-40mm f/4 Canon 50mm f/1.8 Canon Flash 600ex-rt Hahnel Giga T Pro II 2 Extra Batteries

Feedback

Having a vision for your photo is awesome, but improvising on the spot is also extremely rewarding. I had no idea how this photo would turn out when I decided to go out and shoot, but I know it wouldn't have expressed what I wanted it to had it been more planned. I know it's cliche, but going out of your comfort zone, and testing yourself will almost always reap rewards.
