This photo was taken in a dark underground bar in the Old Town of Edinburgh, ScotlandTime
This was around 6pm, Joe was due to perform on stage in the venue and this was just before showtime.Lighting
Parking near the location was incredibly difficult so I packed as light as possible knowing I'd have to walk some distance from the car to the venue so this was a two light set up. I had been in the venue a few times so I knew there was practical lighting I could use in the shot.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon 6D with a 70-200mm lens and lit with two Bowens XMT500s. The light to the rear was bare bulb and the key light had a 120cm octabox modifier.Inspiration
Joe's tour is a 1930s inspired decadent cabaret show so I really wanted to capture a 'golden age of cabaret' look with a hint of early 1900s cinema.Editing
Lowering the vibrance and warming the image helped me to achieve a painterly cinematic feel to the image. Frequency separation was also used to retouch the image to give it a 1930s soft focus look while still maintaining details.In my camera bag
My usual portrait bag contains a Canon 6d, Canon 70-200mm 2.8 lens, Sigma 50mm 1.4 lens, 3 Bowens XMT500s and a small collection of modifiers.Feedback
For this image, planning was essential. I was fortunate to know the venue and see it in advance so I knew exactly where to place the lights before I even arrived.
