I sometimes work with a company which brings Ru Paul Drag Race Queens to Scotland. I grabbed this very quick portrait before a show I was booked for

Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken just before a Monet X Change was about to start her show in Glasgow, Scotland.
Time
This was around 6:30pm. I only had a brief time period with Monet before the showtime so planning was very important.
Lighting
The lighting was pretty much a standard 3 point light setup. This photo was shot in a 30second window of opportunity between a meet and greet with fans and showtime. I set up the lighting in advance and tested it out a few times to make sure it was perfect as I had no time to change the setup. I had originally planned to have a plain wall behind but when I saw an area of the venue with the strong blue curtain, I decided to use that as my background. It was pure chance that it harmonised so perfectly with Monet X Change's outfit.
Equipment
This was shot on a Canon 6D with a 70-200mm lens and lit with a Bowens XMT500 and two Neewer F3-500s
Inspiration
Whenever I'm booked to shoot a drag show, I always aim to get a portrait of the performer to act as 'cover image' for the set. This was supposed to be a quick posed shot but with the blue curtain matching the blue dress, it came out far better than anticipated.
Editing
Apart from the usual curves adjustment and sharpening etc, very little post work was needed on this image compared to my usual shots.
In my camera bag
My usual portrait bag contains a Canon 6d, Canon 70-200mm 2.8 lens, Sigma 50mm 1.4 lens, 3 Bowens XMT500s and a small collection of modifiers.
Feedback
I use this particular image in my teaching sessions a lot, not due to any complexity of lighting, but how simple it was. The main thing is the benefit of planning ahead. I knew time would be an issue so I made sure to go with fool proof lighting and arrived early to make sure it was 100% set to go. Arriving early also allowed me time to check out a few locations in the area which enabled me to find the amazing blue curtain used as a backdrop.
