Location
This photo was taken in my home studio in Edinburgh.Time
This was mid afternoon, Joe had just finished a press event for the BBC and had the afternoon free before his stand up comedy show.Lighting
This was originally lit with just one 56cm beauty dish, but the fall off was too much so a 30x90cm strip box was brought in on camera right.Equipment
This was shot on a Canon 700d with a sigma 17-55 lens.Inspiration
For this particular shoot, my main inspiration was Leonardo da Vinci. I chose the lighting setup after going through a few DaVinci books I have at home, marking and noting the darkest and moodiest images I saw.Editing
The strip light made the hands quite bright so these were darkened slightly in post. Contrast was also given a boost as well as some faux vignetting. In my camera bag
Canon 6d, Canon 70-200mm 2.8 lens, Sigma 50mm 1.4 lens, 3 Bowens XMT500s and a small collection of modifiersFeedback
My main advice would be to make sure the space is dark, so the studio lights are the only light source and there's no light bouncing off other surfaces which can't be controlled
