Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken in my home studio, with my living room wall acting as a background

Time

This was taken during mid day based on our availability during the day. As it was a studio shoot this had little impact on the image.

Lighting

The key light was a gridded beauty dish and two gridded strip lights were used as symmetrical rim lights. All lights were gridded to ensure my white studio background appeared grey.

Equipment

This image was captured on a Canon 700d with a 17-55mm 2.8 lens. Second hand bowens prolites were used as studio lights.

Inspiration

I had worked with B Dolan the previous year to create promo portraits for his music duo with Sage Francis (Epic Beard Men). The shoot a year earlier was under super limited time in an area backstage at the show. Both he and Sage were really happy with the images and wanted to see what could be achieved with time on our side, and in a studio setting.

Editing

I added a textured background to the grey backdrop via an overlay in photoshop. I also added some dodging and burning to help the face pop out from the image.

In my camera bag

These days, I usually have a Canon 6d, 70-200mm 2.8 lens, a Canon 17 - 35mm 2.8 lens and a sigma 50mm 1.4 lens.

Feedback

If shooting in your house, a plain grey or white wall is great for the studio look. Make sure to close curtains so that you have control of the light.
