Beautiful color and excellent composition! Suggestions from my own experience....her skin looks way over smoothed and her eyes are way too clarified and sharp, especially compared to the rest of the portrait. Keep working on it and you could win more than the amateur contest! :D

"Award" got clicked by accident. It should be "Outstanding Creativity". I have no way to change it. Sorry. Stephan

This set of photographs was actually my first real "photoshoot". This set is what I consider to be what inspired me to really get into digital photography in the first place. This photo was taken in my granddaughter's room which was big and airy and open, where she felt most comfortable and where I knew I would obtain the best responses from her.Time
The time of day was very important since my granddaughter was a baby and this had to be scheduled around her nap times (optimal mood!) and also had to be geared for best lighting because she hated the flash already at her young age. My daughter and I planned this shoot for around 2PM on a Saturday since I still work a full time job, which unfortunately is NOT in photography. Maybe someday when I can afford to take classes to learn how to work a real DSLR camera and have the time to take off for the classes, I may be able to quit what I do for a living and become great at something I love to do. At this time though, it is my love and my hobby.Lighting
Because my granddaughter's room was well lit and she was comfortable there, and because she already hated the flash of a camera at such a young age, I knew that the lighting of her bedroom was going to have to be spot on in order to get any decent photographs out of her. Even at 5 or 6 months she knew enough to turn away from a flash on a camera so I wanted it well lit enough to not have to use anything like that. We used the natural light from her window and the overhead light from her room only to make her more comfortable.Equipment
I wish I could say I used fancy camera and lighting and props however, it was a very old KODAK DX6490 ZOOM DIGITAL CAMERA set at Aperture: f/2.8; Exposure: 1/180 which were the "auto" settings because I knew no better. If you want to call a white sheet "equipment", I did throw that over the crib as a "backdrop". When you do not have what you need, you make do with what you have. I have many times, used tablecloths or sheets as backdrops.Inspiration
What inspired me? Well, I am a Gramma to this beautiful creature....all you have to do is look upon that gorgeous face to see what inspired me. My granddaughter has been inspiring me for the past five years. She is the reason that I am on this site. She is the reason I pick up a camera. She is the reason I am involved at all. She is quite simply, my inspiration. I have probably a terabyte of photographs of just her.Editing
There has been a tremendous amount of work put into this photograph. Because of the old camera used and the fact that I did not know any settings when I started out (still learning my new DSLR settings!), this photograph had a lot of noise. As a result, I made many changes to this shot. I softened the skin, faded the background, made the eyes stand out better, placed the bokah in the background, etc. Over time I was very happy with this photo and it became my favorite in this set of shots. Many people ask me about the eyes and how I get them to stand out. I always whiten the whites and burn around the edges. It will make the eyes pop. And no, I did not put lipstick on this baby. Her lips are this rosy.In my camera bag
My bag now has a Nikon D3200 with two lens (normal and zoom), an extra battery; a Sony point and shoot just in case I do not have time to whip out the DSLR; for the Nikon I also carry several filters, an add on flash with diffuser, and extra SD card.Feedback
Babies can be very finicky. You have to get them when they are well rested, well fed and in a great mood, especially if you want them in different clothing and in different poses. I love to shoot babies and toddlers...it is a love of mine. I do not get the opportunity much anymore because my granddaughter and nephew/niece are four and five yrs old however I have photographed them enough to know that if they are not in the mood for photos, you will not get what you want. It also helps to have the parents behind you making faces, or playing with their favorite toy to take their mind off of the camera and to get them to smile, look your way, etc. So tag teaming babies/toddlers is the best idea I can think of to get the shot you are looking for. If you cannot get someone to help, especially a parent or family member that the baby knows, and you are on your own, then do not be afraid to act as silly as it takes to get that smile! I'm glad no one took my photo while I was trying to get that "perfect shot"!
