Location
I took this photo at my house....of all places, in the floor of my dining room!Time
It was late afternoon and my granddaughter was a bit cranky, as you may be able to tell if you look closely at her facial expression.Lighting
I wanted lower lighting which is why I used my dining room and since I'm a novice and (at the time) had no equipment whatsoever, I wanted to illuminate her face only while she was lying down on the mirror. I used only the light coming in the room which wasn't much, and a plug in night light up above her head.Equipment
If I recall for this photo, all I had at the time, was my Sony point and shoot. With my granddaughter, I always had to set it on "kids" mode because she never stops moving however this time, I remember getting on to her because of the low light situation, I needed her to lie still, which is why she was "pouty". Really all I used was the Sony, a plug in night light and a flat "kid friendly" mirror.Inspiration
I'd seen other baby photos that had inspired me to take one like this however I didn't have the camera or any type of know how when my granddaughter was a newborn baby. I had not gotten anywhere near to that point of reviewing other styles of sets and seeing what I liked. So in seeing so many beautiful baby photos done this way, I knew I had to have one of my gorgeous granddaughter, even though she didn't fit the typical "baby" mold for this style of shot.Editing
For post processing, I only did some cropping, minor softening of features and some vignette around the edges. Overall I was pleased with how the photo came out.In my camera bag
Now, because I've started doing more with my photos like canvas and cards or gifts for others (still a novice, this is a part time hobby), I have finally graduated to a dslr camera so I carry lens filters, extra batteries, extra memory card, wi-fi sync, my point n shoot Sony just in case, my zoom lens for the Nikon, flash diffuser, and that's pretty much it.Feedback
A cooperative kid helps! My granddaughter wasn't in the best mood and I got lucky with this one but I can't tell you the times I've spent on setup only to be disappointed by attitude. Make sure they're rested. Make sure your attitude is funny and not too serious also. And just have fun with it. That's the best advice. Next best advice (especially with kids), takes LOTS of photos. You might get a few good ones and a hundred lousy. It's the few great ones that will be that canvas on your wall!
