Location
I live in a quite area in Jakarta, I am lucky to have a lush little garden in front of my house which attracts many insects. So, when I have a photogenic guest, I run and get my camera !Time
It was early in the morning, about 9 am. This is the time when the light is great, Late afternoon is also great but the insects are less placid,Lighting
I was lucky to have the sun coming from the side and also a clean back ground.Equipment
I use a Canon 5D Mark II and a 100mm macro lens. I took the picture hand held. Camera setting was F 3,5, speed at 1/200 to make it sharp, ISO 100Inspiration
I love taking pictures of colourful insects, Dragonflies are my favourites because of their colours, shapes and characters. This one kept still for just long enough to take just 2 pictures.Editing
I use photoshop for post - processing but this picture didn't take much work. I Just cropped it and made some slight colour adjustments. In my camera bag
Over the years I collected quite a few things but when I go out I just keep it to the minimum because it just gets too heavy ! My favourites lenses in my bag are my 100mm macro and the 24 - 102 mm. What I bring along depends on the project I have in mind. For landscapes I bring the dedicated lens and a tripod. But I always bring lens cleaning things, spare batteries and a hat to protect from the sun !Feedback
I think patience is the most important one ! But it helps to have a good macro lens for best results, use your camera settings on manual. For photographing insects you need to move slowly and it helps to wear subdued colour clothes. If you are serious about macro photography, it pays to invest in a good macro lens !
