I attended the Dawn service outside Sherwood RSL this morning and it was an eye opener for me. Thousand's standing to show respect to the fallen and to show support for those still here be it retired or still serving.
I watched as kids proudly walked wearing medals for loved ones now gone. I witnessed as new generations sat at my feet aged 2,4 and 10 yrs old and I realised that the future is looking bright for Anzac day's future.
But mostly I kept the camera down and off and just watched with my eyes.
The look on diggers face as they remember a brother lost but not forgotten. A wife holding a frame with here late husbands image and medals in it trying to hold back emotion. And then I see a small child with the proudest of smiles standing tall as he wears his late granddads hat and medals.
All these things I could have captured on camera but it wouldn't matter as the emotion felt in that moment was one for me to experience.
So once my eyes opened my camera stayed off.
After the ceremony ended I was walking away with my son when I seen this single Poppy on the road. Thousands of feet walking but not one person dare step on it. In a crowed of thousands a single flower with a strong message claimed a piece of the event for it's own. And everyone respected that. Finally it was carried over and placed at the memorial, but to me it showed so much strength and power that a symbol of our heritage could clear a road and make thousand stop... Look... Think...and walk on.
To all that have served or do serve. Thank you for your service.
