Therei s a tiny little harbor up in the North Shore… Of Boston. It’s in the village of Rockport, Massachusetts. And in Rockport Harbor there is this little red lobster shack, on Bearskin Neck, affectionately call “MOTIF #1”. Because of the huge number on artists (and photographers!) that have used it as a favorite subject for their artistic endeavors over many years.
This is a fairly unusual view of the ‘Motif’. The morning had a very even haze (sort of like a huge lightbox in the sky) just before the cloud covered sun rose - and would add some color the sky and water. It resulted in a nice soft even light over the scene. The ocean was very calm and it was nearly windless, with a haze in the distance, which added to the soft, neutral feeling. And allowed the Motif and boats to stand out sharply against the greyness… I used a little gentle HDR and darkened outer edge to accentuate the scene just a bit further.
A bit of Motif #1 history – the original building was built in 1840, as Rockport wqs just becoming an artist colony. The town of Rockport bought it in the 1940s as a monument to local military veterans. The original building was totally destroyed in the big Blizzard of 1978. But was rebuilt exactly as it was that same year - even to the ‘weathered-looking’ red paint… It is a cherished icon by both locals and artists worldwide. Photographers too!…
