Location
Akaka Falls is located in a state park on the Hilo side of the big island of Hawaii, USATime
On a day trip to the big island of Hawaii, my husband and I were exploring waterfalls and decided, after lunch, to find Akaka Falls, which is not far from Hilo. We started walking the Loop Trail and found a waterfall that turned out to be Kahuna Falls. We continued around the loop and could hear the roaring of water. The farther we walked, the more the falls came into view. There is a viewing area, but to get this shot, I had to lean over the fence. It was about one o’clock in the afternoon on February 18th, 2009. This is my favorite photo from our day on the island.Lighting
At that time of day you would expect strong light but he lighting was soft due to the large amount of ash in the air from the eruption of the Kilauea volcano.Equipment
This was a handheld shot with my Panasonic Lumix Dmc-Fz5. No other equipment was usedInspiration
Akaka Falls it the tallest waterfall I have every seen plunging 422 feet. It is tucked away in a deep gorge and I was taken with the beauty of all the lush greenery on the sides.Editing
I used Lightroom to do the post-processing. I cropped the image to make the waterfall the center of attention, set the white balance , and enhanced the green tones. In my camera bag
I usually use a Panasonic FZ 1000 or a Nikon P510 bridge camera with a tripod.Feedback
Be patient, wait for the area to clear, make sure to use a lens hood to help reduce glare, and if possible, use the exposure bracketing setting.
