Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo at the Kula Botanical Garden while taking a photography course on the Hawaiian island of Maui.

Time

I took this photo early in the afternoon when you would expect harsh lighting conditions but I caught it at the right time when clouds were moving over.

Lighting

Because of the climate and the topography at The Kula Botanical Garden the light is always changing. Even though it was early afternoon when I took this photo the light was diffused and softened due to the clouds coming over the top of Haleakala, the 10,000 foot dormant volcano.

Equipment

This photo was taken with my Nikon Coolpix P510 set on the aperture priority setting while mounted on a tripod.

Inspiration

I was enjoying walking around looking at all the bright colors and unique shapes of the tropical flowers. I love the Hawaiian culture and found this interesting tiki surrounded by the beautiful flowers. It called out to me to take the photo to have as a memory of the trip.

Editing

I used Lightroom to correct the white balance and enhanced the green to bring out the foliage in the background.

In my camera bag

I carry my Nikon Coolpix P510 and P900 cameras and I have a set of neutral density, UV and polarizing filters for my P900. I also always carry 2 extra batteries for each of my cameras.

Feedback

Being at an elevation of 5,000 feet be prepared for the changing weather conditions. The trade winds and the sea breezes cause clouds and to come and go unpredictably. The lighting changes constantly. Be prepared to take advantage of the opportunities when they arise.
