Behind The Lens

Location
Yosemite National Park, Lower Falls
Time
about 5PM
Lighting
Late afternoon sun, softened by the canopy and the mist from the falls. Nothing out of the ordinary as to lighting.
Equipment
Canon 5DMKII, EF 17-40 f/4L, Manfrotto 190CXPro Tripod, remote release.
Inspiration
Its Yosemite. What is not to be inspired by Yosemite? This was probably one of the best times to visit. There was an incredible amount of snow in the Sierras over the winter, and the melt raised the water levels. All of the falls at Yosemite were flowing fast and strong. I took a series of shots from various locations, but this is the one that really stood out. The power and the flow of the rapids, the thunder of the falls in the background and the mist rising from all of the power was a true treat to witness. I did want to show the flow, so I did stop down to f/14 for a 1/25 sec exposure. anything slower introduced too much spary on the lens, and a faster speed would not have conveyed the water as well.
Editing
I converted the RAW in Lightroom and did the basic tone/clarity/contrast and exported to Photoshop to tweak the colors. I liked it. But the more i studied the photo, the less I liked it in color. Into Nik SilverEfex it went. I added a red filter, boosted the structure, then finished it with some dodging and burning in Photoshop.
In my camera bag
Canon 5DMKII, Canon 7D and occasionally a Life Pixel modified T1i. Canon 17-40 f/4L or 24-70 f2.8L, 70-200 f/2.8L ISII, Canon 50mm f/1.4 Lee Filter system, Lee GND filters, SinghRay RGND Yongnou wireless triggers Wrigleys Cobalt gum.
Feedback
Bring something to wipe the spray from your lens. The mist and spray can wet your lens in a matter of seconds. Other than that, use a sturdy tripod to minimize camera shake. This was shot at f/14 and 1/25sec. Just long enough to add some blur to the water, and without a pod, camera shake would have ruined it.
