Great lighting on the violin and that pit of bokeh in the background highlights the shot very well! Awesome shot, Edward

Behind The Lens

Location
In front of our Christmas tree
Time
About 9pm
Lighting
I used the Christmas lights for the back drop and to overcome the back lighting, an off camera strobe fitted with an umbrella diffuser. The white and amber lights always present a great opportunity for a great bokeh.
Equipment
Canon 5DMKII with an EF50MM f/1.4, handheld, and a stand mounted 580EX fitted with an umbrella.
Inspiration
My daughter just finished practicing her cello lesson and left the cello by the tree. One look and I was hooked. Also, this was soon after the Sandy Hook tragedy. I dedicated this picture to the families and the community of Sandy Hook. "May this holiday season fill your hearts with songs of joy. And bring peace to those whose hearts have been broken."
Editing
Mixed lighting begged for some correction, so I washed it through Lightroom to balance the tones, and that was pretty much it. I try to stay with my '5 minute' rule. Get it right in camera, and spend less than 5 minutes in post.
In my camera bag
Canon 5DMKII, Canon 7D and occasionally a Life Pixel modified T1i. Canon 17-40 f/4L or 24-70 f2.8L, 70-200 f/2.8L ISII, Canon 50mm f/1.4 Lee Filter system, Lee GND filters, SinghRay RGND Yongnou wireless triggers Wrigleys Cobalt gum.
Feedback
The holidays are a great time to bring out the camera. Lights and decorations abound. Whether you stage a shot, or whether the shot occurs naturally, go with it. Shoot as wide open as you dare, within the limitation of your lens, that is. Invest in a lens with a f/1.4 or f/1.8. Sigma makes a great series, as does Canon and Nikon. For the more affluent, perhaps a Zeiss? Canon shooters can pick up a great 50mm f/1.8 for next to nothing. Enough about lenses. Lighting can be tricky, so use a fill flash, even a pop-up flash will help for something with a bit of back lighting. If you can, shoot RAW, if not, believe it or not, Average Wight Balance (AWB) works great for mixed lighting like this.
