Behind The Lens

Location
Saltwick Bay is a place I go to regular for sunrise shots but I have been wanting to try a sunset shoot with the wreck in the foreground and the sun setting behind it for some time the trouble is it being on the East coast of the UK the best two months for this are June and July when sunsets are more to the north, either work, weather or the tide had been against me but on Saturday 13th July Sunset was about 2.5 hours after high tide the weather forecast looked pretty good so off I went.
Time
I got to Saltwick Bay at about 7:00PM there were two other togs on the beach and the tide had not gone out as far as I would of liked so I nearly changed my mind thinking I would be better off going to Whitby but the sky looked to be shaping up nicely with rain out to sea so I made my mind up to stick to my original plan once I got onto the Beach I could see that with a bit of scrambling over the rocks that go round the edge of the headland I would be able to get where I wanted to be. After taking some shots at the wreck of The Admiral Von Trompe I started to look round for some nice looking rocks to use as foreground interest around the big pool of water on the shale rock bed with Black Nab in the background
Lighting
Lighting conditions were quite tricky with it being quite dark so I used a Lee 0.9 graduated ND filter to reduce the brightness of the afterglow and lift the foreground
Equipment
Canon EOS 5D Mark III, EF17-40mm f/4L USM, tripod, cable release, Lee 0.9 Graduated ND filter
Inspiration
After getting some shots of the wreck of the Admiral Von Trompe a trawler that ran aground here in 1979 with the sun setting behind it I wandered over to this pool of water and saw the superb reflections of the afterglow then came upon the two interesting rocks that made the foreground interest the light was magical and with rain falling out to sea I couldn’t believe my luck
Editing
First it was imported to lightroom to set the camera profile and correct some lense distortion before reducing the highlights a fraction and lifting the shadows once this was completed I exported to Photoshop to set threshold for black and white also I reduced saturation a fraction then I reduced noise with my neat image plugin lastly the image was sharpened using a high pass and that’s it
In my camera bag
Canon EOS 5D Mark III, , EF17-40mm f/4L USM, EF 24-105mm f4 L IS USM Lens, 0.3, 0.6 x2, 0.9 x2 hard graduated Lee filters, 0.6 ND filter, Big Stopper, Little Stopper, Circular polariser, landscape circular polariser, manual white balance card, misc cleaning products
Feedback
Careful Planning and preparation always make things easier on location and although I went for specific shots I always look around for different aspects or patterns that I can use in my images, I have been to Saltwick Bay many times but it is always different the lightis never the same twice or boulders have been moved by the tide so I always go with an open mind
