Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Marco Island, Florida at the end of April. I was standing on my balcony of our condo on the beach.

Time

Sunset, around 7:30 pm. after a day of boating on the islands we always return to condo to catch the sun setting! This photo is very sentimental to me, because we have been spending time in Marco for 20 years, this was our first time in the condo without kids or guests. I was able to watch the sun set each evening from the balcony and snap as many sequences of the ever changing hues( which change by the minute and day) from each days sunsets.

Lighting

Sunsets are one of my favorite subjects because of the varying hues from minute to minute. I find the natural lighting of sunsets to be easy to photograph because the angles are perfect and if you time them right, the exposure follows perfectly as well. I did wait for the timing of sun to be behind the clouds to illuminate the edges of them and it helped remove the glare directly into the lens and allowed a beautiful reflection on the water.

Equipment

I used a Canon Rebel T3 EOS 1100D, 18-55mm lens, flash off, natural light, manual focus, hand held, no tripod.

Inspiration

I love to photograph sunsets and am always looking for the high heights to take them. The condo which is on the eleventh floor provided me with the perfect angle to capture the magnificence and size of the Gulf Of Mexico. The two people cuddled up at waters edge reminded me of myself and my husband and felt we shared the same love of Marco. It also showed the vastness of the Gulf and gave me the perfect shot of two very small people in a very large ocean! Sunsets here are always spectacular, but this one is one of my favorites!

Editing

I did a small amount of adjusting the shadows to see the water texture more clearly, and adjusted the contrast a small amount to balance all elements of the photograph.

In my camera bag

I usually carry my Canon Rebel T3 wherever i go, and I always have my 18-55 mm and 75-300mm lenses with magnifier and filter lenses.

Feedback

Water sunsets are very different from Land sunsets. Water reflects so brilliantly that the timing of your photo is a must for that perfect balance of light, shadows, color, and glare. Clouds provide you with a bit of reflective shelter as well as an added ambiance to the photo. One aspect of sunsets that I always consider whether on water or land, is the height of where I am standing in relationship to the sunset. I prefer to be higher and far way for the effect I achieved with this photo. Sunsets are my favorite because each sunset is dynamic and the properties of the photograph change from minute to minute allowing the photographer to choose just the right time to click!
