Absolutely phenomenal image. Compositional skills using photographic elements of design make for dynamic capture. Technical skills make this a very strong and full of great visual initial impact shot. It would be wonderful to know what you did to create this image both from in camera handling skills to post camera manipulation.

This is a great photo but I highly doubt it was a "self portrait"....Self portraits are normally taken with yourself as the subject and photographer :P Nie work though either way.

Yes, this was 100% a self portrait. I modeled for this, set up the entire composition, focus, exposure, etc, and just had someone else press the shutter instead of using a remote trigger like I usually do. It's absolutely a self portrait. If you look above, you can see replies to people asking about how I did it.

In Moab, Utah.Time
About 11am. This is closer to harsh, noon light than I usually like to shoot in, but I was on a road trip through Moab and didn't have much choice. It also ended up working with the striking rocks and vivid fabric, so while it wasn't my first choice, it ended up working very well!Lighting
This is all natural night, with just a little dodging and burning in post.Equipment
I had my Nikon D40 and the 35-70mm kit lens it came with and a tripod. I set the scene up, locked my camera down and had mu husband act as my human shutter release since I only had a very short amount of time to get this shot in.Inspiration
The song The Grudge, by Tool, has lyrics which sing about Saturn ascending. I've wanted to do something inspired by that for a while, and the stark and dramatic rocks seemed the perfect backdrop for it.Editing
You bet! I took a number of images of me jumping and combined different parts of them together. I had planned out the way I wanted the fabric to be flying, so I tossed and shook it over and over again in the directions I wanted it to go in. I combined countless frames of the fabric and blended them together to get the sinewy design you see here. I also took extra frames of the surrounding rock so I could expand the frame and better portray the grandness of nature. A little light and color play and some light textures finished it off!In my camera bag
A Nikon D5100, a 50mm 1.8 lens, an old 35-70mm kit zoom lens, a lightweight, collapsible tripod, several cheap remote shutter releases and some snacks! You never know when your or your model's blood sugar might get low.Feedback
Plan the way you want your fabric to be flying beforehand and make sure you take lots of frames of it being tossed in the direction you want! You may have to take more photos than you expect to get the perfect shots. Using a solid, non-sheer fabric will make your life a lot easier too. Anything with a pattern can be hard to match, and anything sheer will show the background behind it, limiting where you can use it in the final image. I also try to avoid anything too shiny as the shine can create blown-out highlights. Definitely try this though, it's a lot of fun!
