She is one of the Aethereans; angelic, monk-like beings who live high in the mountains of DreamWorld where they can pursue their spiritual quests in peace. They are skilled healers and highly sought-after councilors. Many of the fae send their children to the Aethereans to be taught love, spirituality empathy, animal care, plant lore, sacred geometry and the mysteries of the universe. Location
This image was actually just shot in my back yard! There is a moderately tall wooden fence, and between wanting to frame that out and wanting to get some lens flare, I chose to shoot at this very low angle.Time
This was late morning/very early afternoon. I'm much more of a golden- or blue-hour lover, I really dislike shooting in bright, direct sunlight like this normally. But in this case, it gave everything a very high-key look, which I wanted, so it worked! And the model and I could sleep in a bit later because of it. :)Lighting
This (and the whole series of these images) are shot completely with natural light; no fill light, no reflector, just the sun behind the model. We may have gotten a little bit of bounce lighting from the cement ground, but if that happened, it was unplanned. I like to work with just natural light as much as possible, as a personal preference.Equipment
I used my Nikon D810 with a Nikkor 50mm prime lens which held it in my hands as I laid on the ground to get the framing and angle I wanted. Very low-maintenance!Inspiration
Teri, my model for the day, has a very angelic, ethereal look. I wanted to play that up with the gauzy, white lace dress and keep everything very simple. This series of images was taken for my DreamWorld series, portraying a monk-like race of beings who live high in the mountains. You can see a subtle, white sacred geometry "tattoo" which I added to Teri's forehead in Photoshop. This played up the spiritual aspect of the beings she was portraying.Editing
The biggest change between the image straight out of camera and as you see it now is simple color balancing. It was much more yellow and red than I wanted, so I shifted everything to much cooler tones (as I do with most of my images). As I said before, I added a white, sacred geometry "tattoo" to Teri's forehead in post; simply because I didn't think of putting it on her until I was editing them! I also cleaned up the background a bit to remove any distracting elements, but this is an example of a much less intensive edit than I often do.In my camera bag
I keep my Nikon D810 along with several zoom lenses as well as two 50mm and 35mm prime lenses. Extra batteries, an external shutter release remote, a flash (which I have yet to use) and a couple extra lens caps since I'm always losing mine. Additionally, I have some fun items like a few colored gels, snowflake ornaments, water bottle top and prisms to shoot through which can add an extra something to an image.Feedback
Wait for the sun to be high enough in the sky to peek over your model's head and shoulders. Have her back to the sun so you don't get any harsh shadows, then expose for her face. You can also brighten up any areas needed in post. Try to keep your background as blank and clean as possible so there's nothing to compete for the eye's attention. A very beautiful model always helps any shoot look its best too! :)
