Black & white seems to suit this. It focuses on his expression more than the colour would.

I love going to the zoo and photograph the animals, this was shot at the Little Rock Zoo in Little Rock Arkansas.Time
Bakari (the lion) is one of my favorite subjects to photograph at the zoo, he is so beautiful and has so much character. Shot late morning early afternoon around 11:30 am 11/9/2013.Lighting
Shot in natural light, no flash or diffusers or reflectors. I am above the exhibit shooting down, part of the exhibit is shaded.Equipment
Shot with a Canon 7D, with a 70-200 f/2.8L with Canon 2x extender with monopod for stabilization.Inspiration
When shooting at the zoo, I am always looking to connect with the animals. For the longest time Little Rock Zoo only had a couple of female lions, so when they brought in a male lion, I was excited. When they first brought in Bakari, he was a young male with hardly a mane, so I feel like I have watched him grow up. On this day he was close enough I was able to capture a full frame face image. I love to get close with my zoom and fill the frame. I called out Bakari and he looked directly at me.Editing
I love a good black and white image, so this was converted to black and white with some dodging and burning done.In my camera bag
What I carry in my bag today only slightly differs from the day I took this image. The only differences is I now carry the Canon 5D Mark III and added the 24-105 mm f/4 to the bag, my other 2 favorites that have been in my bag for several years is the 70-200 f/2.8 and Canon 2x extender, along with at least 2 back up batteries and several memory cards.Feedback
I love going to the zoo and shoot, I always try to have a plan on what I want to capture, but am also flexible in that, since the animals may not always cooperate. So the best advice I have is have a flexible plan and ideas on what you are wanting to capture. Get inspired by other animal images and let the animals inspire you. Most animals have a pattern, watch them and always be patient and wait for your shot. Also don't be afraid to experiment. I really love animals and I try to find a connection with them, I also look for shapes they make or patterns and texture in their hide/fur/coat.
