Location
This photo was shot at Little Rock Zoo. I love going to the zoo and watching the animals and their habits and hope to capture a little of their personality or what I have in my head for the day. I am known to sit in front of 1 exhibit for an hour or more just to capture a certain look.Time
This would have been shot mid morning. The zoo opens at 9 am and I usually go and shoot between 9 am and 11 am.Lighting
This day was overcast. Since I shoot at the zoo in pure natural light, I love going on overcast days, where the clouds act as a filter.Equipment
Canon 40D, with Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L lens (this is my favorite lens) with a 2x extender (my secret to getting close ups)Inspiration
I love big cats and love trying to get them looking directly at me, love when they are in stalking mode and the look you get is them boring through you or looking at you like you could be lunch.Editing
Since I live in Arkansas and there are very few snow days, this is actually a snow overlay. For me the lighting called for snow.In my camera bag
I now shoot with a Canon 7d, but my favorite lens the Canon 7d 70-200mm f/2.8L is always in my bag, along with my street lens 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 is usm.Feedback
Since most zoos are not open at best times for light, look to go on cloudy/overcast days. Have a plan on what you are wanting to capture and visit those exhibits better, if you are familiar with the zoo, save the shaded exhibits for when the sun is stronger. Also be patient at exhibits, watch the animals, they have habits and once you get familiar with what they are going to do, you can plan your shots.
