Location
This is Bridlington North Beach a place I visit quite often usually for long exposure shots of about four minutes standing square on to the breakwaters allowing them to dominate the composition but on this particular morning I quite liked the movement created by the retreating wavesTime
Iarrived at the beach at 7:00am the sky was looking promising so I set up square on to the breakwaters for my usual long exosures and while looking round I noticed the retreating waves were making some beautiful patterns so then moved to this location and took this image at about four minutes past eight just after sunriseLighting
shooting directly into the sun is always difficult even when its not at its strongest so i used a two stop hard ND grad to counter the brightness of the sky and a two stop soft Grad pulled down over the sea to stop the reflections burning out this gave me a 3.2 second exposure at f/16 with an ISO of 100.Equipment
Canon EOS 5D Mark III, EF17-40mm f/4L USM, tripod, cable release, Lee 0.6 Hard Graduated Neutral Density filter and two stop soft graduated Neutral Density filter and circular polarizerInspiration
I like to visit places regularly as I believe that with different light and conditions images can be completely different and I'm always trying to improve on the previous image from the same location so I came to this location with a particular shot in mind but after looking around and observing the conditions decided that this composition would work betterEditing
First it was imported to lightroom to set the camera profile and correct some lense distortion before reducing the highlights a fraction and lifting the shadows Ithen set Black and white before making a slight s shape in the tone curve a sharpen and a little noise reductionIn my camera bag

Careful Planning and preparation such as looking at images from the area on the internet always make things easier on location and although I go for specific shots I always look around for different aspects or patterns that I can use in my images, I have been to Bridlington beach many times but the light is never the same twice I always like to get to a location early so I can take in the atmosphere and look around for points of interest or unusual compositions and check how the waves are moving then if things don't go to plan I can take a different aproach
