Behind The Lens

Location

This is one of my favourite places to visit I just love this set of groynes that look like an ocean liner eising from the waves situated at the north end of Hornsea beach in East Yorkshire and its so easy to get to just a two minute walk from the carpark

Time

It ws the 29th December and I had planned to shoot sunrise but the weather forecast got it wrong and it was a dull morning but I decided to make the best of it by playing with long exposures emphasising the wave motion this was captured at 8:20am I quit liked the water movement in the backwash around the groynes

Lighting

The sky was very dull but the wet groynes seemed to pick up some reflected light from the sea

Equipment

I had my canon 5dmk3 with EF 17-40mm f4L USM mounted on a tripod and I used a cable release so I could get the timing of the shots right

Inspiration

These groynes shot from this angle looks a little like the Titanic rising from the waves and I quite liked the patterns formed by the retreating wave this was plan B really according to the weather forecast there was suposed to light cloud so I was expecting a beautiful sunrise which did not happen

Editing

There is very little processing the shadows were lifted slight contrast adjustments, a sharpen and convert to black and whitr in Nik effects

Feedback

I know this area really well but always prepare for a shoot the night before cleaning my gear checking the weather forecast, the photographers ephimeris for sun durection, magic seaweed for wave hight and swell,tidetimes as this location is better around high tide and I always have a plan B if circumstances are not as predicted. I always arrive early usually at least an hour before sunrise then I'll set up my first shot probably a four minute exposure and have a wander round studying any patterns in the ebb and flow of the tide I tend to prefere the backwash 2 or three seconds after the wave has peaked when the water is diverted around rocks and pebbles
