Location
I was photographing American Bald Eagles along the waterway between Illinois and Iowa on a cold yet clear January day. There are locks and dams there which prevent the water from freezing which makes it an ideal location to photograph birds of prey as they hunt for food.Time
I was out there from early morning until the sun went down. If you are trying to photograph wildlife, you must assume you are going to be outside in the elements most of the day, so dress accordingly.Lighting
Nature and changing your settings are how you will be able to light your subject. If the subject is moving, then you will have to capture your image either by hand holding and panning to follow the eagle or by purchasing an expensive tripod and head that allows you to swivel and pan the eagle in flight.Equipment
I have a Canon EOS 7D Rebel T1I. I used a 100 - 400 mm lens. I handheld my camera, panned the eagle in flight, and captured the shot.Inspiration
It is my passion to photograph wildlife in their natural environment to teach young adults and children about the importance of preserving our natural resources. I also want to inspire people look up from their phones, tablets, and even watches and notice the beauty that surrounds them every day.Editing
I don't believe in much post-processing because that renders the image to become digital art and not a true representation of either the wildlife or its environment. The most I probably did was to crop the image and adjust the white balance. In my camera bag
I usually have one or two camera bodies, multiple lenses, extra cards, and EXTRA batteries.Feedback
Protect your equipment from the elements. Protect yourself by layering your clothing. Be aware of the natural light and background. Always have extra batteries. Finally, remember to have fun and to enjoy the beauty around you.
