Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in my front yard.

Time

I believe it was in the morning.

Lighting

Nature provided the light. I did not use any flash or reflectors.

Equipment

Canon DSLR with a 24-70 mm f/2.8 lens.

Inspiration

I love to focus on the details of a subject, so this flower caught my eye because of its intricate and delicate pattern, its color, and that it was in full bloom.

Editing

I do very LITTLE post-processing. I only use Lightroom without presets or plug-ins. I feel very strongly I have a responsibility to show nature in its glory or decay so people become aware of how endangered our natural resources are without significant human behavior changes. I also do NOT agree with photographers who enter computer-generated compilations as actual nature or wildlife. I don't think they should be allowed in contests for nature or landscape. Stacking is another post-production manipulation I think should render an image disqualified to enter nature and wildlife categories. The post-processing I use is cropping, white balance, contrast and sometimes brightness or saturation. I never use masks or layers to add or delete something to make my image better. I depend on my skill for that.

In my camera bag

I have limited mobility challenges, so I don't carry a tripod because it is too heavy and cumbersome. I also do not carry a flash. I have two bodies, at least two lenses, lots of charged batteries and compact flash cards, and plastic bags to cover my equipment when it rains. You don't have to buy expensive covers. I use a regular plastic shopping bag from the grocery store. I tear a hole in the bottom for my lens to peek out of. I reuse my bags for multiple trips so I reduce my imprint on the environment.

Feedback

For this particular image my focus was on depth-of-field so only the one flower was sharp. I believe there were two or three others, but they were blurred out.
