This photo was taken on the top of the Haleakala Crater on the Island of Maui, HawaiiTime
After watching and shooting the sunset I waited for the light to dwindle away and the stars began to explode overhead brighter than I've ever seen before. Around 11pm it was pitch black and I was ready to shoot the Milky Way.Lighting
The lightning in this photo was all done by mother nature with the exception of a few distant city lights on the horizon.Equipment
This was shot on a Nikon D5200 with a Tokina 11-16mm lens mounted on a Tripod and a cable trigger release.Inspiration
I've always wanted to shoot the Milky way in a location that was pitch black away from light pollution and when I found out I was going to the middle of the pacific ocean on a new moon cycle I just had to get up to the top of the island and capture the incredible nighttime sky.Editing
the Majority of the post-processing went into stitching the panorama together in Photoshop, once that was done minor tweaks to light and color were done to create a mood for the scene.In my camera bag
In my bag I have my main camera body the Nikon D5200 along with two lenses one a standard kit lens nikkor 18-140mm and another Tokina 11-16mm wide angle lens. I addition I also have two Tiffen circular polarizer filters one for each lens along with many memory cards, a cable trigger release, microfiber cloths and a lens penFeedback
My biggest advise would be to plan ahead. Learn beforehand on the position of the Milky Way in the sky from the location you are interested to shoot in. do research on the moon cycle and weather conditions, if you have bad weather once have patience and keep trying.
