These calla lilies were a gift for my stepmother. My father had died almost a year ago and that day was both his birthday and their wedding anniversary. My stepmother has crippling MS and was wheelchair bound when my father died. Shortly afterwards she developed a stage four pressure legion and had been hospitalized for, at the time, 7 months. I wanted to bring her these to cheer her up on what was a very emotional day for both of us. The lilies were so beautiful, I thought I should keep a "copy" for myself. So watered then and I took this photograph on my back deck in the early morning before driving three hours round trip to deliver them to my stepmother. (She hadn't wanted me to visit, so I just dropped them off. Turned out, once she found out I had been there she actually would have had me come in!)Time
It was around 8am, maybe 9am in the morning. On June 11th so the sun was up but it hadn't quite hit our backyard.Lighting
Because it was in the shade but out towards the lighter background, I think the mood I felt was really set. My father's death was (still is) hard but believing there would be a brighter future if I just made it through the grieving process is why this photo became so important to me.Equipment
Just my Canon camera EOS TSi (at the time) and my hands.Inspiration
As I said above, wanting to preserve a memory of my father's first birthday not being on this earth in a way that would be uplifting for me. A couple years later, I was able to enter this image in the ArtPrize competition which was very exciting.Editing
Other than some slight cropping and possibly a little color correction, no. I try to do as little post-processing as possible. I got into photography because I had a difficult childhood which resulted in stress-related memory issues. When I got pregnant, I didn't want to forget events in my children's life so I made sure to keep a camera on me. A lot. When I won my Canon TSi and then the NFL post contest, I grew in confidence. Later, I won more awards at county and state fairs. From that I developed my photography belief/style that my work is an attempt to capture a moment in time, a feeling or an expression. I try not to stage anything. And I definitely try not to over-process my work. Just correct any obvious flaws. In my camera bag
My camera, two lenses, and a couple of light filters. Oh and some SD cards. I need to get more batteries.Feedback
Sit still. So much of photography is about taking the time to really see something. Like how clouds are not always white but can be many different shades. That there are many shades of green in trees - and some trees have purple leaves! Look at something from every angle. And don't be afraid to take a hundred pictures of the exact same thing. I've took 500 photos on a helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon. There are lots I like for personal reasons but only, maybe five that I think are good enough to share with anyone else.
