Behind The Lens

Location

Next to our community swimming pool is a pond, actually called Beaver Pond. We've never seen beavers but there are tons of fish, frogs, crayfish, tadpoles, turtles, dragonflies, and water birds that make this pond a thriving community (snakes trigger calls to animal control). The two bird species that like to hunt at this pond; the Little Green Heron and the Great Blue Heron. So when we go to the pool, I always bring my camera kit and I am either taking pictures of the animals or my kids (but I repeat myself). I had been watching this Great Blue Heron hunting for about 20 minutes when he decided to fly across the pond and try his luck on the other side. I just started shooting rapid fire. Capturing this image, with his wings just about to touch the water, was pure joy.

Time

Midday, summer. Overcast

Lighting

Not much. I'm shooting with a long lens, no flash. Didn't want to spook the animals and needed to be able to rapid fire.

Equipment

Canon Camera, 70-300mm lens,

Inspiration

I adore taking nature/wildlife photos. And the challenge of capturing birds in flight make it even more fun.

Editing

I really do not like to do a lot of photoshopping. So my post-processing is limited to cropping, straightening, and some light and color correcting. I will sharpen an image a tad if necessary but I try not to if possible because it can cause some distortions. As a general rule, I want my images to look as authentic as possible to the moment I took them.

In my camera bag

Canon T2i, 70-300mm, 18-55mm, couple of filters, tons of microfiber cloths, lens hood, business cards, macro lens, remote control, back up SC cards.

Feedback

For wildlife photography, patience. Get comfortable and be prepared to sit very still for a very long time and then shoot a lot of pictures rapidly. Rinse and repeat.
