This is the iconic North Landing at Flamborough Head I had parked up in the car park here to try and capture sunrise at Queen Rock a sea stack that stands in the shadow of Breil Newk about half way between here and the lighthouse but the weather forecast got it wrong again it was quite a dull morning but on the way back to the car I noticed the light trying to break through so stopped here and decided to try a long exposure.Time
I set off out about 6:30 am 10 minute drive to Flamborough 15 minute walk to Breil Newk I spent about half an hour at Breil Newk then packed up feeling a little disappointed, I arrived back to here about 7:45 after setting up and taking a few other shots it was about 8:13when I took this shotLighting
it was quite a dull morning so I just used a 1 stop hard Graduated neutral density filter to balance the exposure I also used a 6 stop Neutral density filter to create a four minute shutter speed to give the sky some movement and to flatten the sea plus a circular polarizer to enhance the colours and remove some of the glare from the seaEquipment
I used a Canon EOS 5D Mark III with the EF17-40mm f/4L USM mounted on a tripod with a cable release, Lee filter holder with the little stopper 1 stop Neutral Density Filter and Circular PolariserInspiration
I have captured images of this cove before so when I was on my way back from my planned shoot feeling quite disappointed with the light I noticed the light breaking through the clouds so I stopped and peered over the cliffs Usually I only capture the two front boats when I use this location but I quite liked the composition with the five boats.Editing
Import to lightroom click the remove chromatic aberration and enable profile corrections boxes then a slight curves adjustment lastly in the basic tab lift shadows, reduce highlights shift click whites and Blacks and adjust white balance thats it for lightroom I then export to photoshop where I remove any dust bunnies before a levels adjusment then I use neat image to reduce noise and thats itIn my camera bag

Even though I plan meticulously checking the weather forecast and tide times you cant always rely on the weather forecast so a good knowledge of the location and surrounding area is most advantageous but this shot was just about taking advantage of a little luck with a break in the clouds and knowledge of the location
