Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in Alghero (in the north of Sardinia) a couple of summers ago

Time

it was night and I was taking a walk in the village after dinner.

Lighting

I only had the camera with me, so I took advantage of the high ISO rendering of the sony A7ii, there is no added light apart from the dim light given by the artificial lighting of the city.

Equipment

As I said I only had the camera with me and the 28mm f2 from sony, which I consider an excellent lens for reportage photos, given the particular angle of field of the 28mm and the fact that being quite speedy, it allows to have a discrete detachment of the subject from the background and a fuzzy blurry

Inspiration

it's a lucky shot. This cat was nice relaxed in the middle of the sidewalk and did not seem at all worried that I was there to take some pictures of him. The photo was practically ready, I love this photo in its simplicity and for the very precise focus on the eyes.

Editing

I always do a bit of post production to improve the colors of the raw. In this case I did a little dodge and burn and enhanced the detail on the eye, without exaggerating. You should never go overboard with post production in order not to risk having ridiculous effects.

In my camera bag

When I walk with the camera around my neck without particular purposes, as in this case I only wear a fixed and speedy lens, the 28mm is suitable for the purpose because it is small and light but speedy enough. Otherwise for portraits I have several fixed lenses such as the 35mm f1.4, excellent lens with a fantastic bokeh but decidedly voluminous and not very suitable for shooting without commitment. I also have a wide angle lens that I use for landscape photos.

Feedback

Just a tip: always go out with the camera. It is true that today cell phones also take good pictures, but this three-dimensionality can only be obtained with a large sensor and a fixed lens.
