One of the first images I created for my "Flying Project Series"
I wanted an explosion of color and movement. I hope this image shows that :)
I had her standing on a chair while I shot from across the street. My sister and my assistant moved the dress while I directed. You would not believe the number of people that stopped and stared with a confusing look in their eyes. Also, there is a street in between her and I, so many cars stopped! I had to actually tell them that I appreciated their curiosity, but that they were in the shot! ;)

Wonderful creativity... love the contrasting combinations of the fine fashion she is wearing, the delicate element of the fleeing butterflies within the environment of a decaying building! Very engaging photo!

Location
This image was taken in front of an old house in Arequipa, Peru. I used to live less than a block away from it, and I always wanted to use it for something different and unique since the wall is so beautiful. The model is a friend of my sister's who was generous enough to donate her time. I also had my sister and assistant help with the dress and with holding the ladder the model was standing on. The building is located in an old part of town, so streets are very narrow. To get the shot, I had to stand on the opposite side of the street. People were very curious about what was going on and would stop frequently to look at the girls working the dress, I think I spent more time explaining what we were doing and politely asking people to move out of the way than actually shooting :)Time
I shot this at about 10 am. The sun in Arequipa is quite strong, but I was planning on shooting using the shadow of the blue wall. The building behind me (facing the model) is almost completely white, creating a wonderful quality of light at that time so I wanted to take advantage of that.Lighting
For my surreal photography I try to use exclusively natural light. I had a reflector with me at the time of the shoot, but the wall behind me acted as a reflector, so I didn't have to worry about that. I tend to look for shade and shoot at the brightest time of the day, however odd that may seem :)Equipment
I used a tripod and my trusted Canon 7D with a 28-135 mm lens. Also, I used a chair or ladder to lift my model from the floor and create the levitation effect.Inspiration
When we were shooting this image I kept asking the model to flip her hair. I loved how curly and wild it was. I decided to create an effect that would mimic the movement in her hair, as if it was flying away. That is why the dress turns into thousands of red birds. I wanted to convey a sense of freedom and joy :)Editing
Yes! 8 hours and more than 50 layers of Photoshop are the secret behind this, and most of my images. I use the non-destructive method of editing, so this image killed my computer a couple of times because of its size. I used several brushes, textures, and effects. The effect of the dress alone is made up of about 20 layers. I love how Photoshop gives us the tools to show others what is going on in our minds. In my camera bag
I carry two camera bodies: Canon 5D Mark III and Canon 7D. I also have a 50 mm prime, 70-200 mm, 24-70 mm, and a 10-22 mm. I always have a grey card, a tripod, and a reflector with me.Feedback
The most important thing for surreal and levitation photography is to have a plan. One has to know in advance the effect you wish accomplish so you can get the necessary shots. It is like a puzzle that can't be put together without all the pieces. Take some time before the shoot to make a list of the images you will need and set up your shoot according to that list. Also, know your equipment. One has to have the ability to adapt to the lighting situations. Pay attention to your white balance, ISO, shutter speed and aperture settings . If you are trying to shoot in automatic settings the image quality, color, and feel of the images won't be consistent. This makes it extremely difficult to create a composite that is believable and looks natural.
