This amazing house is located a couple of blocks away from my home in Peru. I have always loved it and wanted to photograph it. I wanted to create a unique image with it though, so I brought a friend, 2 volunteers and lots of creativity and came up with this.
I love the colors... I love her hair... I love the dress... and I love the background.

love the colors! looks like surrealism in painting very little shadow - that was planned?!

Nice catch! Yes, I shot this image in the afternoon to make sure I avoided hard light and strong shadows. It was a cloudy day so the light was beautifully difused! I love shooting in shade and then exagerating contrast in post if necessary :)

Thank you! I am a big fan of how fabric interacts with wind and motion :)

Location
I am from a beautiful city in the south of Peru called Arequipa. The traditional houses and streets there are just beautiful and colorful. This is a house that is located a couple of blocks away from my parent's home. As I was a child I would always walk by and stare and it, I was always fascinated by its colors and design.Time
We waited until it was about 4 pm to take this photo. The sun in Arequipa can be very bright so I wanted to wait until we has some easier light to work with. We were lucky though because at the time of shooting clouds covered the sun and we got beautiful soft light everywhere! :)Lighting
When possible I like working with natural light. This photo was taken when clouds were covering the sun, so we had beautiful soft light that made it easy to capture the colors of the background and dress.Equipment
I used a tripod, my Canon 7D with a 28-135 mm lens. I also used a small ladder so she could appear floating above the ground.Inspiration
The house... I love it. I wanted to live there as a child! When I was looking for locations for my "Flying Project" images, I knew I had to use it! I was really careful about the colors I was going to use in the dress because I wanted them to complement the house colors and not take attention completely away from it. It was also very clear to me that I wanted there to be a lot of movement in both the girl and the dress. I made my model move around quite a bit so we could get the hair exactly the way I wanted it :)Editing
Yes. My images require some compositing in Photoshop. I shoot the background and the model by themselves and then create the desired effect. (I do shoot the model on location so it looks as natural as possible)In my camera bag
I carry two camera bodies: Canon 5D Mark III and Canon 7D. I also have a 50 mm prime, 70-200 mm, 24-70 mm, and a 10-22 mm. I always have a grey card, a tripod, and a reflector with me. Also, when working on this project I carried clips and safety pins since none of the dresses are real, they are just long pieces of fabric that we fashion into dresses on the spot :)Feedback
Have a plan and know your equipment! Creating a composite is like putting together a puzzle, and you need to know the pieces you will need. So make a plan and be prepared :)
