The woman in the image was just fantastic. She is a single mother and her strength was just obvious :) I love photographing strong women!

jimcarey, that is exactly what I was thinking during the entire shoot. It was really hot and humid that day, and the place had open windows and no air conditioning. Sweat and discomfort were a low price to pay for the shot though ;)

I love a shot that makes me take time to really let it sink in. I don't know what it is, but I love how the model feels so prominent in the shot while at the same time occupying so little of the frame. Can't get enough of this shot.

thank you! I feel the same way. I often try to photograph people in bus, or somewhat distracting backgrounds. I love the challenge it is to make them stand out. I am really glad you took the time to make the comment!

Location
This image was taken in an old mill in Lawrence, MA. I managed to get access to the 5th floor of the mill only one week before it was transformed into apartments. It was meant to be! There was no air conditioning and it was really really hot but the large windows and beautifully textured walls were just too good to be true :)Time
This shot was taken at about 11 am. I remember it was a really hot and humid day and it was probably not the best time to be stuck here with no air conditioning, but it was the only time we had access to this beautiful building.Lighting
I love working with natural light. It makes everything look so organic and believable, so even though I had a speedlite with me, I chose not to use it as fill light. I enjoy working with shadows and soft light, but because it was 11 am the quality of light wasn't the best. I used large pieces of white plastic (I found at the site) to diffuse the light and get it to be this soft an beautiful. I also played a bit with how far from the window she would stand. I wanted just enough shadows to give her a unique and mysterious look, but it was also important to me to keep detail in the shadows.Equipment
I show this with my Canon 5D MarkIII and my 24-70mm f/4L lens. I didn't use a tripod, flash, or reflector.Inspiration
I love photographing beautiful subjects in rundown buildings. I am constantly asking people if they know of any abandoned buildings I can shoot, but I am a portrait photographer, so I feel the need to have a human subject to work with. I was looking to create a contrasting look in this image, one that would state very clearly that there is always something beautiful in every situation.Editing
I post-process every image. Having said that, there is very little done to this image. I made sure the colors were exactly the way I wanted them to be, and dodged the background a little. In my camera bag
I carry two camera bodies: Canon 5D Mark III and Canon 7D. I also have a 50 mm prime, 70-200 mm, 24-70 mm, and a 10-22 mm. I always have a grey card, a tripod, canon speedlite, and a reflector with me.Feedback
Plan ahead or take your time analyzing your location before you fire the first shot. Know your light and know what you want your image to look like before you shoot it can be the single most important step in the whole process, and surprisingly enough, it doesn't involve the camera. For example: Knowing that I didn't want any fill light saved me a lot of time the day of the shoot. The other very important thing to remember is to get it right on camera. If you have issues with exposure it is always very helpful to carry a light-meter in your bag! It can save you so many headaches! Also, when doing portraiture, specially when going for a specific mood, learn to pose your subject and don't be afraid of telling them what to do.
