Once monsoons start they can be found found in my state Karnataka in India quite easily. :)

Once monsoons start they are quite easily found in my state Karnataka in India,along with a huge no of other snakes and frogs.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in the Sharavathi Rainforest in Karnataka, India during a short documentary project.

Time

I remember walking towards the dinner area at night when the naturalist of the resort shouted 'snake, snake', forgetting the hunger I rushed back to try room and grabbed my camera, being dark and using video lights, i used a tripod to stabilise my shot at a slow shutter speed.

Lighting

I used two continuous video lights here, one as the main light from behind, and another as a fill from the front.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D4s along with a macro lens mounted on a tripod for stability. I prefer using the Nikon cameras as they tend to perform far better in low light.

Inspiration

Snakes are highly misunderstood and hated creatures, but in truth, they are fascinating and beautiful, I love taking portraits of snakes and showing their raw beauty to the world.

Editing

Basic adjustment of colours to get the actual colour of the snake, I make it a point to represent the true colour of the subject, especially while photographing and presenting wildlife.

In my camera bag

The gear I usually use is as follows: Cameras - Nikon D4s, Nikon D3s Lens - Nikkor 600mm F4 VR Aerial/drone - DJI Phantom 3 Professional Support system - Gitzo tripod + ball head I occasionally rent the following equipment based on requirement - Nikkor 200-500mm & Nikkor 70-200mm for photographing mammals, Tokina 16-28mm for wide angle and Nikkor 105mm VR macro for closeups & macro shots.

Feedback

While photographing it is best to know what snake one is photographing and their characteristics, it is also a good idea to avoid handling them.
