Location
This photo of the Grey-headed Fish Eagle was taken in the backwaters of Kabini in Karnataka, India.Time
This photo was taken in the evening before the sun went down.Lighting
This photo was made from a boat in not so calm waters. The boat man had seen the eagle at a distance and went towards it at a slow pace, I knew the approach had to be just right so as to not spook the eagle, but then I also wanted to hurry up as the light was beginning to fade.Equipment
I used a Nikon D5 and a AFS Nikkor 600mm F/4G ED VR lens. Since I was shooting from a rocking boat with no support for the tele lens, I rested my elbow against my chest for stability, I also made sure, I was getting a good shutter speed to negate the boats movement.Inspiration
When I saw the eagle posing so majestically against a lovely background, I knew I wanted to make this portrait.Editing
I think wildlife photos should involve only the basic post-processing such as fixing colours, white-balance, sharpness, etc. a little of which was applied here as well.In my camera bag
usually have main bag carrying my Nikkor 600mm and the D4s. The second bag contains my Nikon D3s, which is another excellent camera for really low light situations. I usually rent out any of the following lenses, the Nikkor 70-200mm F2.8 and Nikkor 80-400mm tocompliment the 600mm. The Nikkor 105mm macro lens for macro work and the Tokina 16-28mm when I need to go wide.Feedback
Understand the behaviour and nature of your subject, it will help you plan the shot. Once you have located the subject there is a high chance of the subject displaying the behaviour you want to capture.
