If you let your mind wonder a bit you may be able to see a crusted muddy surface looking down on the earths crust. A wind swept dry lakebed. A few lonely hovering grey clouds traveling over a baron landscape!! Wonderful how your perception can grab you and toss you in a totally different location!! Thank you for sharing your vision with one of nature’s most majestic creatures!! Cheers!!

Behind The Lens

Location
The photo was taken when the elephant was dusting himself with mud in one of forest departments elephant camps.
Time
The photo was taken in the evening where the sunlight coming in from the side lit up all the dust adding drama to the photo.
Lighting
I decided to position myself in angle so that the light would coming from behind where the dust was flying so as to highlight it.
Equipment
This photo was taken using a Canon 6D and a Canon 100-400mm.
Inspiration
I had often see photos of African Elephants dust bathing themselves and when i saw this happening right in front of me, I knew the kind of photo I wanted to present.
Editing
A quick conversion to B&W.
In my camera bag
I usually carry one or two full frame bodies, a telephoto 600mm lens and a zoom lens. Other than this I usually have a rain cover to protect the gear when required, my MacBook pro and a couple of external drives to make quick backups.
Feedback
I have always said this and will repeat myself, always maintain distance with animals as they can quite often be unpredictable. A telephoto or a zoom lens gives you a safe working distance and also ensure the animal is at ease thus giving you great photos showing its natural behaviour.
