Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken during a promo shoot for a collective of personal trainers at a small gym in Dundee, Scotland.

Time

This was a long day of shooting which started fairly early at 9am. As it was indoors, and the gym (below ground level with no windows) was fully exclusive to us, the time of day didn't affect the image much.

Lighting

Lighting was created with a Bowens Prolite 82 on a 1x1m softbox to mimic natural daylight through a window. A second light (Bowens prolite 41) was used with a reflector dish to light the background.

Equipment

Camera - Canon 550d with a 17-55mm lens Lighting - Bowens prolite 82 and Bowens prolite 41

Inspiration

I was really looking to develop my 'gritty' style at this point in my career and was thrilled to have access to a warehouse styled gym. I wanted to use the shoot to experiment with how lighting could accent body physique.

Editing

It's pretty much as it appears straight out of camera aside from a boost to shadows, contrast and a cross processed colour grade.

In my camera bag

These days, I usually have a Canon 6d, 70-200mm 2.8 lens, a Canon 17 - 35mm 2.8 lens and a sigma 50mm 1.4 lens.

Feedback

Lighting is key. With controlled lighting, you can choose which parts of the body to accent and play with light position to make the best use of the space and model. With a natural light shoot, I would have been limited in which angles I could shoot and possibly needed to move a lot of the equipment around for best results.
