This shot was taken couple days ago at the Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park along River Road in Lambertville, New Jersey. After a few exposures I noticed a couple ducks downstream. Luckily they kept going back and forth along the foreground shore of the fairly narrow canal. The much bigger Delaware River was couple hundred yards to my back.
This NJ state park is a long complex of the old canals, originally dug in the 1800s, to allow tugs and barges too carry on commerce as the Industrial Revolution changed America. Basically it went along the Delaware and connected to the Raritan River in central NJ and out to the sea at Raritan Bay. It’s now used only for recreation (fishing, biking, picnicking, boating, etc). But a warning – there are locks in the canal and a few dams (waterfalls)built over the years in the rivers, so with kayaks and canoes, there will be some portaging… And bigger boats can’t go in canals and some shallower portions of the rivers… But of course for photographers, there are always many opportunities…
